The Beginners Guide to Female Masturbation

The Beginners Guide to Female Masturbation

Even today, in the 21st century, there’s still a social stigma surrounding female masturbation. Here at Ann Summers we’re determined to eradicate the taboo around flicking the bean, and celebrate women indulging in a little (or a lot of) alone time.

92% of women confessed to masturbating in our 2015 Sex Toy Survey. With our top tips (and maybe a toy or two), you can also enjoy orgasms on demand and get intense satisfaction, completely solo.

Girl, (Un)interrupted

Before you get started, relax – you don’t need to dive straight into the main event. Light some candles, perhaps enjoy a long bubble bath and take your time before your hands head down south.

Let your imagination run wild. Fantasise about a kinky situation, a time when you’ve had insanely good sex, watch some porn or read a sexy novel to turn yourself on. The more turned on you are, the better your orgasm will be.

The Touch of my Hand

Begin the build up to the big O by getting to know your body better. Use a feather-light touch to slowly stroke up and down your thighs and begin applying gentle pressure to your nipples. Not all women enjoy nipple-play, but if it works for you, experiment by using circular motions, gently pulling them or flicking them with your fingers throughout your solo session.

Lube up

Lube isn’t designed just to combat dryness down there. It’s a massively underrated product that can literally heat up any solo session. Extra lubrication is never a bad thing, and it can increase your comfort, libido and pleasure.

Take a pea size amount of one of our lubes, perhaps a stimulating or warming lube to heighten sensitivity, and slowly massage it on your clit and labia. The sensations will spread throughout your body and add an extra, satisfying tingle.

Meet your new best friend the clitoris

Many women need direct clitoral stimulation to reach an orgasm and, unsurprisingly, it's considered the centre for female pleasure. There’s no ‘correct’ way to masturbate, but if you’re a beginner here’s a few techniques to get you started.

Start by indirectly rubbing around the clitoral area in circular motions, building up the pressure and speed slowly as the pleasure intensifies. Teasing your body is so important - the longer you deny yourself direct stimulation the more mind-blowing it will feel when you finally touch your clit.

When you simply can’t take any more, spread your lips apart with two fingers so your clit is exposed. Take your finger from your other hand and begin by stroking your clit up and down slowly. Play with positions to find what works best for you. Some women adore lightly stroking the sides of the clit, others prefer directly rubbing the tip with one or two fingers in circular motions.

One thing’s certain – as you’re getting closer to climaxing, you’ll need to increase the speed. If you need a little help, consider introducing a vibrator into the mix. Our bullets are ideal for beginners, as their small size makes them absolutely perfect for targeting the clit.

Hit the Spot

Utilise both of your hands and begin the quest for the G-spot. It can be tricky to find, so don’t feel disheartened if you can’t hit the right spot at the start.

Adding some penetration alongside clitoral stimulation often pushes women completely over the edge. Trust us, dual stimulation is often the secret to achieving out-of-this world blended orgasms.

Insert one or more fingers, depending on comfort. You can either use thrust-like motions to stimulate or begin massaging the vaginal wall until you find your sweet spot. If you’re desperate for something a bit bigger, play with one of our dildos. Smaller sizes are recommended for beginners.

Don’t feel like you have to sit still either, masturbation can turn into a real work out. Try raising your pelvis, pressing your thighs together or even rocking back and forth. Experiment with speed, angle and pressure - there are so many techniques and positions to try.

Remember, you don’t have to orgasm every single time, darling. Masturbation in its entirety is supposed to be an incredible experience. It’s not all about that explosive ending!

Body Talk

No two bodies are the same, and everyone will enjoy different forms of stimulation. It’s important to remember the beauty of masturbation is that it gives every woman a chance to explore their body.

It might take some experimentation, but every girl should be able to find out what drives them absolutely wild.
