A Guide to Choosing the Perfect Dildo

It's not the size that counts. Unless you want it to.

A Guide to Choosing the Perfect Dildo

There's so many different kinds of dildos out there, but it's really not a one-size-fits-all kind of deal. The world's first sex toy has come a long way and these days, if you're looking to buy a dildo, you've got plenty to choose from. Whether it's your first ever dildo and you're not sure which type to go for, or you're not quite hitting the spot with your current go-to toy, don't just panic and grab the first one you see.

First of all, ask yourself – why are you buying a dildo? What are you gonna want to do with the thing once you've got it in your hands? Depending on what you want out of it, you might find yourself coming to love something you'd never even expected. Ann Summers is here to help you find that perfect partner...

Replicating or replacing?

Are you looking for something that gets you as close to the real thing as possible, or are you after something a little more fantastical? Either way works for us, but if you're after the real deal, both in form and function, then realistic models like the Real Feel Mr Dick are perfect.

Molded in skin-safe material, realistic dildos are thick and weighty, firm yet soft, and feature veins and ridges for bona-fide realism. But it's not just about looks – many realistic dildos feature suction cups for fixing them to walls, floors, chairs, tables and shower tiles so you can hit all your favourite positions, rather than relying on your own hands.

Killer vibes...

You'll find plenty of vibrating dildos, intended purely for internal stimulation unlike clit-stim bullets. Strong vibes aren't for everyone – are you after an extra buzz, or would you rather do things the old-fashioned way? Fortunately, vibrating dildos come in realistic and... well, less-realistic styles, so don't settle for something that just doesn't quite do it for you.

Hitting the spot

Are you less interested in the same old experiences, and want serious stimulation for your body's pleasure centres? When it comes to hitting the spot, there are loads of options available.

Anything flexible, or with more of a curve to it, can be used to hit your G-spot – you might just need a little practice. More focused toys are available in our G-spot vibrators category – toys like the Slim G-Spot Vibrator rely on vibration to deliver pleasure, and the size and angled tip on toys like the Silicone G-Whizz or Moregasm G-Spot Vibrator mean they're the perfect shape whether you indulge in the buzz or not.

For the boys, anal prostate massagers target deep vibrations exactly where you want them – the Divine Prostate Massager is perfect for the first-timers looking to explore.

Size matters

How much size can you take? Dildos come in a range of sizes – from the two-inch Anal Intro Finger to the nine-inch Mr Ben. But it's not just about length – make sure you check the "insertable length" so you know exactly how much you'll have to play with. Also make sure you check the girth or diameter in the product description too – the diameter is the width at the widest point, and usually varies from an inch to two inches. Girth means the circumference – a little bit of maths will tell you that Mr Harry's five-and-a-half inches of girth is just over an inch and a half at its widest point.

Materials

The right material is all about your personal preference – different materials mean different sensations. Check product descriptions to find what a toy's made of – it should give you a pretty good idea of how it will feel.

Jelly-like Phthalate-free PVC is a great choice for beginners – it's nice and flexible, for a gentle introduction, and the Six Inch Dildo is definitely our top tip. Flexibility is ideal for apprentices – a little more bend means you can ease yourself in a little more comfortably, and work your way up to deeper penetration.

Medical-grade, skin-safe silicone is firm but flexible as well as being soft and smooth, which makes it one of the most popular materials on the market for vibrators, like the Rampant Rabbit Silicone One.

Realistic dildos are usually made out of skin-safe rubber, TPE and TPR, but there are plenty of other toys that use these soft but firm materials too. Our Vibrating Dildo is made of both TPR and firmer ABS plastic for powerful internal pleasure.

Glass are much firmer and harder than any other materials out there, perfect for working the G-spot without the need for vibration. Their stimulating ridges will warm or cool, too, so you can introduce even more amazing sensations by experimenting with temperature.

Playing together?

If we're honest, just about any dildo can be amazing for couples – whether you're using them during foreplay to work yourselves up before the main event, or positioning them for double penetration. But if you want to push the limits a little with your partner, there are loads of options for indulging your kinkier sides.

Strap-on dildos are often the couple's choice, and we'd recommend them to any adventurer looking try toys with a partner. Strap-ons allow intimate penetration between straight and lesbian couples, perfect for exploring anal and pegging, BDSM play, or just coming together.

If you want a dildo that you can also use with a strap-on harness, you'll need to pick something with a solid base, so it won't slip out. The Beginner's Pegging Dildo is a great option for beginners, if you hadn't already guessed. But anything that will fit snugly through the harness's O-ring and has something to keep it from falling out will do. Real Feel dildos are perfect – the balls will keep things nicely in place.

If you're looking for simultaneous penetration, the double-ended dildo is flexible enough to use by yourself for double penetration, but is perfect for couples too.

We're all about couple vibes too – vibrating double penetrators and strap-ons are perfect for pairs looking for a real buzz.

All about the looks...

The best bet is just to trust your instincts. You're gonna know if something's right for you just by looking at it, whether you can't wait to get your hands on your new best friend, or you're just not feeling it. Are realistic toys nice and familiar, or just not quite there for you? Do Glass toys look a bit cold and uninviting, or sleek and sexy? There's no right or wrong answer. You've just got to go with whatever's best for you, and any lucky partners joining you for the ride.

We'd also suggest not overdoing it – the sight of bigger toys might light a fire in desperate need of putting out, but if you've never used one before, you might need to work up to it.

Still, don't be afraid to take a chance on something you like the look of! You can always read our product reviews to find out how our satisfied customers got on...
